Case Study - Utilizing Space
We were originally hired to tackle the children’s playroom. During the process we noticed several under utilization of space issues. There was a utility room off of the laundry room where things were just on the ground. There was not space for ironing clothes in the laundry room nor for hanging wet items. There was a suite adjacent to the master bedroom which only contained a desk, but no file drawers, bookcases or additional storage space. We put our organizational minds to work.
First, we sorted toys for age appropriateness and than donated those items that did not fit the children’s current play category. Next, we sorted like items with like items. Third, we stored small toys and books in colored containers. Red for the little girl and blue for the little boy. There was a utility area located adjacent to a laundry room and underneath a stairwell. The stairwell had empty space below it, so we seized an opportunity to create an extra hidden storage area. After cutting through the wall we used metal rolling racks for additional movable storage. We designed a multi-use closet and storage area, which we had built to match the preexisting desk. We used trifold sliding doors for easy access. We built in file drawers, storage drawers, hanging space and bookshelves.
